Fittings
Tube fittings are critical components in fluid conveying systems because they secure connections between tubes and ports. All connections are potential leak points in fluid systems. While instrumentation tube fittings and ultra-high purity tube fittings are both used in various industries for fluid and gas handling applications, each are designed to meet different requirements and standards. Instrumentation fittings are typically used in industrial and general-purpose applications while UHP fittings are designed for applications that demand the highest levels of purity and cleanliness. They are often used in industries such as semiconductor manufacturing, biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, and food processing, where even trace levels of contamination can be critical.
There are a few different types of fittings that are commonly used in high purity situations, the first being welded fittings. Welded fittings are components used in piping systems to connect and branch off, reduce pipe size, attach auxiliary equipment or redirect the flow of fluids, gasses, or other substances in a secure and leak-proof manner. These fittings have a radius junction design with elbows to provide smooth flow path as well as precision machined diameter to match the tube diameter. There are three series of welded fittings in high purity: M series, L series, and T series. They each have tube wall uniformity to promote weld repeatability as well as the option of manual or automatic welding equipment if applicable.
The M Series
- The most common with a compact design to save space
- Size ranges from 1 ⁄ 8 ” and 6 mm to 12 mm
- Surface roughness finished to an average of Ra 10 μin. (0.25 μm) or electropolished to Ra 5 μin. (0.13 μm) optional.
The L Series
- Extended tube design, machined from forging blanks except for straight configurations
- Size ranges from ¼” to 1” and 6 mm to 18 mm
- Surface roughness finished to an average of Ra 10 μin. (0.25 μm) or electropolished to Ra 5 μin. (0.13 μm) optional.
The T Series
- Made from 316L Stainless Steel
- Size range of ¼” to 2”
- Standard surface roughness finished to an average of Ra 15 μin. (0.38 μm) or electropolished to Ra 10 μin. (0.25 μm) optional.
Face Seal Fittings
Face seal fittings are a type of tube fitting commonly used in high-pressure and high-purity fluid and gas handling applications. These fittings are known for their reliability and ability to maintain leak-tight seals even under extreme conditions. The FR Series Metal Gasket Face Seal Fittings (VCR) have metal-to-metal seals to provide perfect leak-tight service for high pressure applications to critical vacuum systems.
These fittings have silver-plated female threads, a test port for easy leak testing as well as a precision manufactured gasket to ensure best performance. Sizes range from 1/16″ to 1″ and 6 mm to 18 mm as well as standard surface roughness finished to an average of Ra 10 μin. (0.25 μm) or electropolished to Ra 5 μin. (0.13 μm) optional.
The TFO Series L-Ring Face Seal Fittings have R=reduced internal entrapment along with a lubricant-free L-ring seal. There is a controlled L-ring extrusion that prevents over-tightening as well as a butt weld connection to ensure the system is unhindered. The standard roughness is finished to an average of Ra 20 μin. (0.51 μm) and sizes range from ¼” to 1”.
The FO Series O-Ring face seal fittings (VCO) have an O-ring seal to have a leak-tight fit in vacuum or high-pressure situations. Sizes range from 1/8″ to 1″ with a smooth finish on the gland face to ensure a positive seal. The FO series has easy installation and maintenance as well as a test port for easy leak testing.
These fittings are most known for their make and break ability since they are designed for applications that demand the highest levels of purity and cleanliness and can be easily dismantled, allowing the process system to be cleaned, and consumable parts such as gaskets and o-rings to be replaced. They are often used in industries such as semiconductor manufacturing, biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, and food processing, where even trace levels of contamination can be critical.
